Baseball: A History Of America's Favorite Game

Baseball: A History Of America’s Favorite Game

$9.29

Football is force and fanatics, basketball is beauty and bounce. Baseball is everything: action, grace, the seasons of our lives. George Vecsey’s book proves it, without wasting a word." -Lee Eisenberg, author of The Number In Baseball , one of the great bards of America’s Grand Old Game gives a rousing account of the sport, from its pre-Republic roots to the present day. George Vecsey casts a fresh eye on the game, illuminates its foibles and triumphs, and performs a marvelous feat: making a classic story seem refreshingly new. Baseball is a narrative of America’s can-do spirit, in which stalwart immigrants such as Henry Chadwick could transplant cricket and rounders into the fertile American culture and in which die-hard unionist baseballers such as Charles Comiskey and Connie Mack could eventually become the tightfisted avatars of the game’s big-money establishment. It’s a celebration of such underdogs as a rag-armed catcher turned owner named Branch Rickey and a sure-handed fielder named Curt Flood, both of whom flourished as true great men of history. But most of all, Baseball is a testament to the unbreakable bond between our nation’s pastime and the fans, who’ve remained loyal through the fifty-year-long interdict on black athletes, the Black Sox scandal, franchise relocation, and the use of performance-enhancing drugs by some major stars. Reverent, playful, and filled with Vecsey’s charm, Baseball begs to be read in the span of a rain-delayed doubleheader, and so enjoyable that, like a favorite team’s championship run, one hopes it never ends. "Vecsey possesses a journalist’s eye for detail and a historian’s feel for the sweep of action. His research is scrupulous and his writing crisp. This book is an instant classic a highly readable guide to America’s great enduring pastime." The Louisville Courier Journal From the Hardcover edition.

One Day At Fenway: A Day In The Life Of Baseball In America

$11.09

Saturday August 30 2003 — Yankees versus Red Sox Fenway Park. Not just a special day in a great rivalry but also a unique one in the long tradition of baseball writing. For on that day Steve Kettmann worked with a team of top reporters to chronicle everything that happened from the point of view of everyone involved. So here are Red Sox owner John Henry and CEO Larry Lucchino privately second-guessing Grady Little’s managing moves during the game; here is Joe Torre the Yankees skipper worrying on the bench about his closer Mariano Rivera who can’t find home plate; here’s Theo Epstein Red Sox General Manager playing guitar until his fingers bleed the night before the game; here’s Hideki Matsui Yankees slugger surprised that no Japanese reporters turn up to greet him at the ballpark; and here’s Bill Mueller Red Sox third baseman driving to the game hoping he can get a hit to help Boston win. But it’s not just the famous voices we hear. Let One Day at Fenway introduce you to Theo Gordon who’s told his girlfriend Jane Baxter forty-five lies and watch as Marty Martin does what all good Red Sox fans should do only to find himself thrown out of the ballpark. Taken together these and a myriad of other voices reveal a day in the life of baseball unlike ever before showing in this unique project the human side to America’s pastime.

The Soul Of Baseball: A Road Trip Through Buck O'Neil's America

The Soul Of Baseball: A Road Trip Through Buck O’Neil’s America

$12.59

When Legendary Negro League player Buck ONeil asked sports columnist Joe Posnanski how he fell in love with baseball Posnanski had to think about it. From that question was born the idea behind THE SOUL OF BASEBALL. Posnanski and ONeil decided to spend the 2005 baseball season touring the country in hopes of stirring up the love that first drew them to the game. This book is just as much a tribute to Buck ONeil as it is the story of baseball. In a time when disillusioned steroid-shooting money hungry athletes define the sport Buck ONeil stood out as a man that truly played for the love of the game. Posnanski writes about that love and the one thing that ONeil loved almost as much as baseball: the people who played it. THE SOUL OF BASEBALL is an endearing step back in time to the days when the crack of a bat and the smoky notes of a midnight jam session were the sounds that brought the most joy to a mans heart.

He was cursed with that worst of professional maladies the ill fortune of almost. Now after years of struggling up the coaching ladder Howie’s finally been given his shot: as manager of the Cleveland Indians. But America’s pastime has changed. Whether Howie can spot a small flaw in a batter’s swing won’t matter if he can’t manage his superstar outfielder Jay Alcazar a slugger with enormous talent (and an ego to match). No crisis on the field fazes Jay and no woman off the field ever rejects him. But one night at the hotel Howie sees something at Jay’s door he wishes he hadn’t…and it leaves Howie with an impossible choice. From six-time National Sportswriter of the Year and NPR commentator Frank Deford comes a richly detailed page-turning tale that takes you deep into America’s game. Wild and Outside: How a Renegade Minor League Revived the Spirit of Baseball in America's Heartland

Wild and Outside: How a Renegade Minor League Revived the Spirit of Baseball in America’s Heartland

$9.39

At a time of despair about our national pastime, the Northern League of Professional Baseball is a beacon of hope – an independent league, unaffiliated with the majors, where the games are for the fans and not between the owners and players. In his memorable debut book, Stefan Fatsis takes you inside the Northern League, and in the process discovers how very much baseball still means to America. Commentator Peter Gammons calls the Northern League "the past and future of grassroots baseball in America." Revived in 1993 by a group of minor league executives fed up with the politics of their sport, it has restored baseball to six communities in the upper Midwest and Canada, which have embraced their teams with a fervor any major league team would envy. More than that, the league has breathed new life into a game that, at the major league level, has lost its way and abandoned its fans. The Northern League’s startling success has inspired a movement that could, in time, change the face of baseball, as other independent leagues are forming rapidly in its wake. Wild and Outside tells the Northern League’s story, from the events that created it through its tumultuous and triumphant second season. Fatsis writes with the authority of a trusted insider, having closely followed the league since its inception. The result is a book as rich in insights into baseball’s problems as it is full of indelible portraits of the people who make the Northern League special; a book that blends the texture and history of grassroots baseball with the many dramas of the league’s 1994 season.

With Matt Walbeck,Altoona Curve (AA) Manager (Pittsburgh Pirates affiliate); Baseball America’s 2007 Minor League Manager of the Year,2007 Eastern League Manager of the Year;former Erie SeaWolves (AA) manager (Detroit Tigers affiliate and West Michigan Whitecaps Manager;2X Midwest League Champions (Class A)Coach Walbeck presents his ideas for developing the necessary strength to be a successful baseball player. ‘Training with a purpose’ is crucial for maximum strength. The physio ball is a valuable exercise tool for baseball. The ball is used for crunches, which strengthens the stomach, gluts and back muscles. The hamstring exercise works on balance and stabilization. Another exercise that strengthens the lower back and gluts is the “Superman” drill. The simple foam roller can be used to stretch the IT band in your leg. By rolling your thigh over the roller, your knees, back and arm will benefit. The spin stretch is executed by using the foam roller also. Balance is enhanced by working with the Erickson balance pad. Dumbbell exercises are shown to strengthen shoulders, arms and biceps. These exercises can help any player with his throwing ability. Leg weights, rubber tubing and medicine ball exercises can be incorporated into this workout routine. Other important stretches are the hip flexor, glut stretch, groin stretch, sleeper stretch and hamstring stretch. The skill of running, both distance and sprint work, is necessary for all baseball players. Baseball players can increase their talent level by properly working with this stretch program by major-league veteran Matt Walbeck. 32 minutes. 2006.

Baseball Haiku: The Best Haiku Ever Written About The Game

$17.29

One of the most unusual baseball books of the 2007 season, this remarkable new collection, which includes poems from both America and Japan, captures perfectly the thrill of baseball-a double play, a game of catch, or the hushed pause as a pitcher looks in before hurling his pitch. Like haiku, the game is concerned with the nature of the seasons: joyous in the spring, thrilling in summer’s heat, ripening with the descent of fall, and remembered fondly in winter. Featuring the work of Jack Kerouac, the king of the Beat writers, who penned the first American baseball haiku, and Alan Pizzarelli, a major American haiku poet, the collection also includes Masaoka Shiki, one of the four great pillars of Japanese haiku, who fell in love with baseball when he was a student in Tokyo. Baseball Haiku , a literary and baseball treasure, will make a marvelous gift for the baseball fan in your family. Presenting more than two hundred of the greatest haiku ever written about the game.

Big Hair And Plastic Grass: A Funky Ride Through Baseball And America In The Swinging '70s

Big Hair And Plastic Grass: A Funky Ride Through Baseball And America In The Swinging ’70s

$9.99

The Bronx Is Burning meets Chuck Klosterman in this wild pop-culture history of baseball’s most colorful and controversial decade The Major Leagues witnessed more dramatic stories and changes in the ’70s than in any other era. The American popular culture and counterculture collided head-on with the national pastime, rocking the once-conservative sport to its very foundations. Outspoken players embraced free agency, openly advocated drug use, and even swapped wives. Controversial owners such as Charlie Finley, Bill Veeck, and Ted Turner introduced Astroturf, prime-time World Series, garish polyester uniforms, and outlandish promotions such as Disco Demolition Night. Hank Aaron and Lou Brock set new heights in power and speed while Reggie Jackson and Carlton Fisk emerged as October heroes and All-Star characters like Mark "The Bird" Fidrych became pop icons. For the millions of fans who grew up during this time, and especially those who cared just as much about Oscar Gamble’s afro as they did about his average, this book serves up a delicious, Technicolor trip down memory lane. A Q&A with Dan Epstein courtesy of Scratchbomb.com, May 2010 As a kid, I was fascinated by 1970s baseball. The huge afros, the amazing facial hair, the retina-burning uniform designs–it seemed like such an insane, colorful era, particularly when compared to the heavily moussed 80s, where I spent most of my kid-dom. (Of course, there were some colorful characters then, too, but that’s a tale for another time.) Whenever I had some disposable income (which was not often), I would spend it at a baseball card convention or store, usually on a large plastic box filled with completely worthless cards from 1977 or 1975, just so I could savor such sartorial majesties as Willie McCovey’s sideburns . My elementary school library had these slim books on each major league team, all published in the mid-’70s, which I borrowed repeatedly. And whenever my grampa took me to Cooperstown, I’d seek out the unbelievable mini-exhibit on the technicolor uniforms from those years (sadly, no longer there). While there are some chronicles of players and teams from the 1970s ( T he Machine and Ladies and Gentlemen, The Bronx Is Burning are great, recent examples), there haven’t been many (if any) retrospectives about the decade in total. When people speak of a Golden Age of Baseball, they usually save such mythologizing for the 1950s and its stainless, sepia-tone heroes. But now there is finally an evangelist for game as played in the Me Decade. Journalist Dan Epstein has penned a love letter to 1970s baseball entitled Big Hair and Plastic Grass: A Funky Ride through Baseball and America in the Swinging 70s . ESPN’s Rob Neyer has said of this tome, "What the 1960s were to America, the 1970s were to baseball, and Dan Epstein has finally given us the swinging book the ’70s deserve." The book drops May 25 from Thomas Dunne Books, and there will be a big ol’ release

The Baseball Codes: Beanballs, Sign Stealing, And Bench-Clearing Brawls: The Unwritten Rules Of America's Pastime

The Baseball Codes: Beanballs, Sign Stealing, And Bench-Clearing Brawls: The Unwritten Rules Of America’s Pastime

$14.49

Everyone knows that baseball is a game of intricate regulations, but it turns out to be even more complicated than we realize. What truly governs the Major League game is a set of unwritten rules, some of which are openly discussed (dont steal a base with a big lead late in the game), and some of which only a minority of players are even aware of (dont cross between the catcher and the pitcher on the way to the batters box). In The Baseball Codes , old-timers and all-time greats share their insights into the games most hallowedand least knowntraditions. For the learned and the casual baseball fan alike, the result is illuminating and thoroughly entertaining. At the heart of this book are incredible and often hilarious stories involving national heroes (like Mickey Mantle and Willie Mays) and notorious headhunters (like Bob Gibson and Don Drysdale) in a century-long series of confrontations over respect, honor, and the soul of the game. With The Baseball Codes , we see for the first time the game as its actually played, through the eyes of the players on the field. With rollicking stories from the past and new perspectives on baseballs informal rulebook, The Baseball Codes is a must for every fan. From the Hardcover edition.

The Crowd Sounds Happy: A Story Of Love, Madness, And Baseball

The Crowd Sounds Happy: A Story Of Love, Madness, And Baseball

$5.59

From the author of the best-selling The Catcher Was a Spy, his most original work yet: a memoir of two cities (New Haven and New York), a family (troubled), a time (the 1970s), a boy who never quite fits in anywhere–and how baseball helps him find his place in America. The Crowd Sounds Happy is the story of a spirited boy’s coming-of-age in a doomed hometown, with a missing father, a single mother, and the professional ballplayers who gradually become the men in his life as he listens to them every night on the bedside radio. This is a childhood shaped by remarkable characters, foremost Nicholas Dawidoff’s mother, a stoical, overwhelmed, enterprising woman committed to securing a more promising future for her children. It also tells, with the same arresting candor of Dawidoff’s celebrated New Yorker magazine memoir of his father, what it’s like to grow up with a disturbed, dangerous parent. Here are the events and places that come to define a young boy’s outlook: a local playground, a kidnapping and a murder, rock ‘n’ roll, the steamy awkwardness of adolescence and first love, and the private world of baseball–the inner game as it has never been described before. The Crowd Sounds Happy is a beautifully written, moving piece of personal history that transforms ordinary moments into literature. From the Hardcover edition.

Have Glove, Will Travel: Adventures Of A Baseball Vagabond

Have Glove, Will Travel: Adventures Of A Baseball Vagabond

$5.99

It was 1982 when Bill Lee was famously booted from the Montreal Expos after he went AWOL in protest of another player’s mistreatment by management. His reputation for antics both on and off the field guaranteed that no other club would pick him up. The Ace from Space had landed on professional baseball’s blacklist, and so it was that one of the most popular major-league pitchers of our day was fated to pack his bags and wander the globe searching for a ball game. Have Glove, Will Travel is the chronicle of an amazing odyssey that began more than twenty years ago and continues today. Unable to live without baseball, Lee went anywhere he could find a game, beginning in the dank and dreary locker room of a Canadian hockey team that later became a softball team. We follow him around the world as he competes in pickup games, town tournaments, senior leagues, and fantasy camps, barnstorming like a modern Satchel Paige around the United States, South America, China, Cuba, Russia, and every province in Canada. At the heart of this story are the rollicking, colorful characters Lee meets during his travels, and the mishaps that befall him whether he’s sober or stoned. There’s the eccentric Latin pitching master Lee plays with in Cuba, who once struck out Ernest Hemingway. And a hilarious story that takes place in the backwoods of a British Columbia timber town, where Lee and Hall-of-Famer Ferguson Jenkins go fishing and end up being chased back to their pickup truck by a 450-pound black bear. Have Glove, Will Travel is so much more than the average baseball book. Lee’s humor, keen eye for detail, and extraordinary pitching intellect are always on display, but in the end this book is a love story about a middle-aged maverick who refused to stop pursuing his passion for a boy’s game long after the grown-ups told him he couldn’t play on their team anymore. Readers who loved Lee’s bestselling The Wrong Stuff , also written with Richard Lally, will find the long wait for this rich and wonderful sequel well worth it. Those who haven’t yet encountered the literary Bill Lee have a great treat in store. From the Hardcover edition.

Rickwood Field: A Century In America's Oldest Ballpark

Rickwood Field: A Century In America’s Oldest Ballpark

$16.59

While America has changed dramatically over the last hundred years, Rickwood Field, the pride of Birmingham, Alabama, has remained fixed in time. Best-selling baseball writer Allen Barra journeyed to his native Alabama to capture the glories of a century of baseball lore. In chronicling the history of Rickwood Field, where the manually operated scoreboard still uses numbers painted on metal sheets, Barra also tells of segregated baseball, the vaunted Negro Leagues, and captures the ghosts of the players themselves, including Ty Cobb, Babe Ruth, Satchel Paige, and Willie Mays. Evoking such classics as Shoeless Joe and The Boys of Summer , Barra recalls not only a simpler, bygone era but also a city rife with racial tension and abject poverty, where a tattered ballpark was, and still is, a rare beacon of hope. Indeed, Barra skillfully convinces us that the histories of Rickwood Field, baseball, and the American south are inextricably bound together. The extraordinary social history of Rickwood Field becomes the story of baseball itself, gloriously evoked for the centennial of America’s oldest ballpark.

Cooperstown Confidential: Heroes, Rogues, and the Inside Story of the Baseball Hall of Fame

Cooperstown Confidential: Heroes, Rogues, and the Inside Story of the Baseball Hall of Fame

$9.19

If baseball is America’s national religion, then the Hall of Fame is its High Church. Being named among its 286 inductees makes you the closest thing our country has to an undisputed hero – even a secular saint. But the men in the Hall of Fame are no angels. Among their number are gamblers, drunks, race-baiters, at least one murderer, and perhaps the greatest collection of bona fide characters ever to be dignified by an honor of any kind. This is the book the Hall of Fame deserves. Along with the story of the institution comes a smart, irreverent discussion of some of the great barstool questions of all time (Why did Jim Bunning make the Hall but not Mickey Lolich? How much is it worth to a player’s autograph-signing career to get in? Did Ty Cobb really kill somebody?) and a fresh look at some of the Hall’s most and least admirable characters. Taken in all, it amounts to a shadow history of America’s Game, shown through the prism of its most sacred spot. Written with a deep love of the game and a hardened skeptic’s eye, this is a book to incite both passionate conversation and a fresh appreciation of baseball as a mirror and catalyst for our nation’s culture.
