Assuming you are in a standard format Yahoo scoring type league the best strategy is to go strictly high end hitters in the first 5 rounds and then go on a starting pitcher run in rounds 6 through 8. There is a lot of quality starting pitching available then and the fall off of top hitting is pretty drastic after the top 5 rounds so get the booming high average bats before they are mostly gone. Closers can be had much later as there are plenty of very good closers available later in the draft. Cheap speed is also available later so stay away from the speed in the first 5 rounds (Ichiro, Ellsbury, etc.) and grab a rabbit or two later. And late in the draft go for the high potential young guys over the so called solid veteran hitters or pitchers….why not gamble on the breakout guys over guys who wont help you win but wont really lose it for you. Hit on 1 or 2 of the kids and you are in amazing position to win a league (imagine those of us who picked guys like Lind, Longoria, Braun etc as I have over the past couple years). There are guys that fit that bill again, you just need to put in the work and know who they are (there is at least 2 3rd baseman, 4 outfielders, 1 catcher, 1 2nd baseman, 2 SS and 4 or 5 pitchers who easily fit that bill and you need to only hit on a couple of those in the real late rounds to gain a huge advantage….worst case is they dont pan out and you simply cut them and move on).
