Why was the Minnesota Twins baseball game postponed today?
I know all about the bridge collapsing. Was it the only way to the stadium or something? Don’t think me heartless. I understand the tragedy of the situation and that maybe 30 people died. But if there were a couple of building fires, say one at a senior’s home that kills 18 and one at high school that kills 12 would they cancel the game? No. 30 people will have died but they wouldn’t cancel the game. So it’s a traffic issue then right?
I’m not angry the game is cancelled. I couldn’t care less about the game. I’m just curious what the reason is and if it’s hypocritical or not.
So why was the game postponed?
george—you ignored my point….they wouldn’t cancel the game under the fires scenario.
Ahhh….I was unaware of the tax dollar/new stadium celebration scheduled……..that’s a different story then.
Thanks.
erika—with 7 spelling errors I won’t even acknowledge your answer.
Safety issue of traffic, and in respect to those lost due to the bridge collapsing. Also it was inappropriate to hold this celebratory game in the midst of a tragedy.

Games Approach to Coaching Baseball Video (Copyright 2000) (VHS) $25.95 Discover a revolutionary and superior way to coach! Games Approach to Coaching Baseball shows you how to use this new approach to help 6- to 14-year-old athletes learn game skills and tactics more effectively than with the traditional “drills-first, play-laterâ€? approach. The games approach begins with kids playing the game. As they play, they learn and appreciate the skills and tactics needed to play the game successfully. Games are modified to strengthen individual technique and team play. Kids have more fun and are more motivated to practice in these small-sided games rather than standing in boring drill lines.Games Approach to Coaching Baseball clearly demonstrates how to:modify games to focus on particular skills and tactics;adjust the difficulty depending on your athletes’ needs;assess players as they play;actively involve players in the learning process; andteach and refine baseball skills and strategies. This video is part of the Games Approach to Coaching video series, which is composed of four videos that will teach you how to incorporate the games approach into four sports — baseball, basketball, soccer, and volleyball.About the EditorThe American Sport Education Program (ASEP) is the most widely used and respected sport education program in the United States and the world. ASEP’s mission is to help improve the sport experiences of all youth athletes by providing quality instructional resources, workshops, and courses for coaches, officials, administrators and parents. ASEP strives to spread it’s philosophy of “athletes first, winning second” by providing the necessary tools to help put that philosophy to work in local programs and institutions.Over one million people have used ASEP products since the program began in 1981. More than thirty states now require ASEP courses for their high school coaches, and more than 200 universities use ASEP courses and resources. ASEP courses are used by many national and local sport organizations as well, including the National Federation of State High School Associations, National Recreation and Park Association, U.S. Army youth sports, USA Baseball, USA Volleyball, USA Gymnastics, US Swimming, and the U.S. Tennis Association, just to name a few. Erotic Games People Play $1.19 The literature of sex research is rife with case histories and explanations of "psychopathic" sex practices among persons with warped emotions and twisted minds. Yet today, with the increased permissiveness of our society, more and more people who lead otherwise normal lives are engaging in activities of a type that most people consider "abnormal." Who are these people? What sex roles do they assume when the lights are out and no one is looking? Has the increased permissiveness of our society only now made us aware of this phenomenon–or has it actually caused many individuals to enter a private life style that they would otherwise never have discovered? Gene North, a well-known California sex researcher, probes these and other questions in this documentary study. Here are verbatim interviews with outwardly normal people who privately plunge into sadomasochism, homosexuality, Lesbianism, wife-swapping, outright hedonistic orgies–and other deviations that cover the entire range of human sexual behavior. Additional: Dr. Guenther Klow was finally forced to vote against North's Ph.D. thesis when it became clear the candidate had become too personally involved in his research. |

Have Glove, Will Travel: Adventures Of A Baseball Vagabond $9.29 It was 1982 when Bill Lee was famously booted from the Montreal Expos after he went AWOL in protest of another player’s mistreatment by management. His reputation for antics both on and off the field guaranteed that no other club would pick him up. The Ace from Space had landed on professional baseball’s blacklist, and so it was that one of the most popular major-league pitchers of our day was fated to pack his bags and wander the globe searching for a ball game. Have Glove, Will Travel is the chronicle of an amazing odyssey that began more than twenty years ago and continues today. Unable to live without baseball, Lee went anywhere he could find a game, beginning in the dank and dreary locker room of a Canadian hockey team that later became a softball team. We follow him around the world as he competes in pickup games, town tournaments, senior leagues, and fantasy camps, barnstorming like a modern Satchel Paige around the United States, South America, China, Cuba, Russia, and every province in Canada. At the heart of this story are the rollicking, colorful characters Lee meets during his travels, and the mishaps that befall him whether he’s sober or stoned. There’s the eccentric Latin pitching master Lee plays with in Cuba, who once struck out Ernest Hemingway. And a hilarious story that takes place in the backwoods of a British Columbia timber town, where Lee and Hall-of-Famer Ferguson Jenkins go fishing and end up being chased back to their pickup truck by a 450-pound black bear. Have Glove, Will Travel is so much more than the average baseball book. Lee’s humor, keen eye for detail, and extraordinary pitching intellect are always on display, but in the end this book is a love story about a middle-aged maverick who refused to stop pursuing his passion for a boy’s game long after the grown-ups told him he couldn’t play on their team anymore. Readers who loved Lee’s bestselling The Wrong Stuff , also written with Richard Lally, will find the long wait for this rich and wonderful sequel well worth it. Those who haven’t yet encountered the literary Bill Lee have a great treat in store. From the Hardcover edition. |

Extra Lives: Why Video Games Matter $13.39 Tom Bissell is a prizewinning writer who published three widely acclaimed books before the age of thirty-four. He is also an obsessive gamer who has spent untold hours in front of his various video game consoles playing titles such as Far Cry 2 Left 4 Dead BioShock and Oblivion for literally days. If you are reading this flap copy the same thing can probably be said of you or of someone you know. Until recently Bissell was somewhat reluctant to admit to his passion for games. In this he is not alone. Millions of adults spend hours every week playing video games and the industry itself now reliably outearns Hollywood. But the wider culture seems to regard video games as at best well designed if mindless entertainment. Extra Lives is an impassioned defense of this assailed and misunderstood art form. Bissell argues that we are in a golden age of gaming-but he also believes games could be even better. He offers a fascinating and often hilarious critique of the ways video games dazzle and just as often frustrate. Along the way we get firsthand portraits of some of the best minds (Jonathan Blow Clint Hocking Cliff Bleszinski Peter Molyneux) at work in video game design today as well as a shattering and deeply moving final chapter that describes in searing detail Bissell"s descent into the world of Grand Theft Auto IV a game whose themes mirror his own increasingly self-destructive compulsions. Blending memoir criticism and first-rate reportage Extra Lives is like no other book on the subject ever published. Whether you love video games loathe video games or are merely curious about why they are becoming the dominant popular art form of our time Extra Lives is required reading. From the Hardcover edition. |

The Naked Olympics: The True Story Of The Ancient Games $5.59 What was it like to attend the ancient Olympic Games? With the summer Olympics’ return to Athens, Tony Perrottet delves into the ancient world and lets the Greek Games begin again. The acclaimed author of Pagan Holiday brings attitude, erudition, and humor to the fascinating story of the original Olympic festival, tracking the event day by day to re-create the experience in all its compelling spectacle. Using firsthand reports and little-known sources including an actual Handbook for a Sports Coach used by the Greeks The Naked Olympics creates a vivid picture of an extravaganza performed before as many as forty thousand people, featuring contests as timeless as the javelin throw and as exotic as the chariot race. Peeling away the layers of myth, Perrottet lays bare the ancient sporting experience including the round-the-clock bacchanal inside the tents of the Olympic Village, the all-male nude workouts under the statue of Eros, and history’s first corruption scandals involving athletes. Featuring sometimes scandalous cameos by sports enthusiasts Plato, Socrates, and Herodotus, The Naked Olympics offers essential insight into today’s Games and an unforgettable guide to the world’s first and most influential athletic festival. "Just in time for the modern Olympic games to return to Greece this summer for the first time in more than a century, Tony Perrottet offers up a diverting primer on the Olympics of the ancient kind.Well researched; his sources are as solid as sources come. It’s also well writen.Perhaps no book of the season will show us so briefly and entertainingly just how complete is our inheritance from the Greeks, vulgarity and all." –The Washington Post From the Trade Paperback edition. |

Scorecasting: The Hidden Influences Behind How Sports Are Played and Games Are Won $13.99 In Scorecasting, University of Chicago behavioral economist Tobias Moskowitz teams up with veteran Sports Illustrated writer L. Jon Wertheim to overturn some of the most cherished truisms of sports, and reveal the hidden forces that shape how basketball, baseball, football, and hockey games are played, won and lost. Drawing from Moskowitz’s original research, as well as studies from fellow economists such as bestselling author Richard Thaler, the authors look at: the influence home-field advantage has on the outcomes of games in all sports and why it exists; the surprising truth about the universally accepted axiom that defense wins championships; the subtle biases that umpires exhibit in calling balls and strikes in key situations; the unintended consequences of referees’ tendencies in every sport to "swallow the whistle," and more. Among the insights that Scorecasting reveals: Why Tiger Woods is prone to the same mistake in high-pressure putting situations that you and I are Why professional teams routinely overvalue draft picks The myth of momentum or the "hot hand" in sports, and why so many fans, coaches, and broadcasters fervently subscribe to it Why NFL coaches rarely go for a first down on fourth-down situations–even when their reluctance to do so reduces their chances of winning. In an engaging narrative that takes us from the putting greens of Augusta to the grid iron of a small parochial high school in Arkansas, Scorecasting will forever change how you view the game, whatever your favorite sport might be.
