Who discovered American Patchwork (quilting) and why? Who discovered Sashiko (quilting) and why?
What is one similarity and one difference between them?
My 3rd grader is currently learning the importance of doing his homework instead of going to baseball….Any help would be greatly appreciated!!!
“American patchwork” was created pretty much by women who wanted to use up the extra scraps and pieces of fabric they had leftover from making clothing and even drapes, upholstery, etc.
The pioneer women in the US and slaves in the South were kind of the first, I think, since they were the “poorest.” I believe that “crazy quilting” which is both piecing and embroidery techniques may have started more with the upper-crust though since they involved velvets and other fancy fabrics as well as lots of extra stitching that was just decorative.
Once the patchwork “top” was created, then it was sandwiched with a backing fabric and usually some kind of filler inside (batting, an old blanket, etc.) to create more warmth, then all the layers were “quilted” together by hand (nowadays that can be done by hand or by machine) or they were simply “tied” in numerous places, to hold the layers together and keep the inside layer from bunching up or moving around.
(The term quilt can confusingly mean “a quilt” or “to quilt” a quilt.)

“Sashiko” on the other hand, seems to be a method only for sewing the layers of a layered blanket together (sort of equivalent to hand quilting a quilt in the US). The stitches were often made with light-colored cording or thick thread on a dark fabric, and they are much longer stitches than is common for “quilting” a quilt in the US.
The info I googled though says sashiko can also be done through only *one layer* of fabric though simply to create decorative stitching on it, as well as done through several layers.
