What is the overall popularity (participation) cricket vs baseball in Australia?
I was curious since some Australian baseball players play or have played at the MLB-level. Two players that come to mind Graeme Llyold (pitched for my favorite team New York Yankees) and Dave Nilsson ( was a solid player) both retired.
Almost forgot you beat Japan in 2004 (Athens) won a silver.
I think 4-5 Australians will start this year some more play in the minors. Will this sport be hurt since it was dropped by the Olympics 2012?
OK wanted something that’s a real awnser would help if the person really is a citizen or resident of Australia.
Ok thanx everybody for your participation. Here’s a baseball fact you might find interesting: originated from the British game rounders.
Baseball is very much a minority sport in Australia.
There are some leagues and some purpose built stadiums, but we don’t have TV coverage or anything like that.
Cricket is arguably the national sport. It’s arguably the biggest sport in the country, as it is popular throughout the whole country (Australian Football is huge in Southern states, and Rugby League and Union popular mainly in the Northern states).
The Australian cricket captain is sometimes said to have the second most important job in the country (after the Prime Minister).
Nillson and Lloyd are known names in Australia with their success in the US, but most people would walk past them in the street here.
The Olympics. I don’t think baseball is a real Olympic sport anyway, meaning we don’t stop everything to watch the Olympic baseball, compared to say, the Athletics or Swimming.
By far the most popular US sport is basketball. There is a National League (NBL) and alot of it’s popularity is because juniors play basketball throughout the country.

Most Uncommon Degree of Popularity $9.79 "Her daughter enjoyed a most uncommon degree of popularity." – Emma , Jane Austen Your own daughter. . . one of the popular girls? On the first day of middle school, Lydia Meadows, a former lawyer turned full-time mother, is startled to discover that her daughter Erin is one of the popular girls, a tight foursome whose mothers are also great friends. Lydia has always thought of popular girls as ambitious little manipulators who enjoy being cruel. But Erin is kind and well-adjusted. Maybe this popularity thing won’t be so bad after all. Then a new student ruthlessly targets Erin to boost her own popularity, and Lydia helplessly wonders what to do when her daughter’s phone stops ringing. And the uneasiness among the girls begins to affect the friendship of the mothers–even though they are all grown women who should know better. Has their driven energy, once directed toward their careers, turned into an obsession with the social lives of their daughters? A Most Uncommon Degree of Popularity is a delightful novel of manners, an unabashed chronicle of the rules, rituals, and pitfalls of raising a daughter. |

Mr Cricket $13.79 Cricket has been the heartbeat of Mike Hussey's life since the age of 12, about the time that he found it more comfortable to bat lefthanded than right. He adores the game, analyses it, researches it and respects it. Described as Bradmanesque, Hussey is the fastest batsmen ever to reach 1000 test runs, and he certainly knows a thing or two about how to put willow on leather. Since first donning the baggy green in early 2005, he has tormented opposition bowlers the worldover. Whether dashing English Ashes dreams at home or shining in oneday colours, Hussey is a batsman and cricketer of outstanding ability, versatility and class. But it wasn't always this way. Few at his first club, Perthbased Wanneroo, rated the skinny and shy teenager. Mike was terrified and doubtful himself when first picked for their A side. He knew he had to gain weight, get stronger and practise. So he did. A lot. Endless hours of training and thousands of balls later Mike was ready to step up and be counted. The rest, as they say, is history. In this, his first ever book, Mike reveals how he made the transformation from talented teenager to sporting superhero, his remarkable passion for the game and exactly what makes him such a fierce, driven competitor. Packed with jawdropping facts and figures and illustrated with colour and black and white photographs, Mr Cricket is the unputdownable story of Mike Hussey and the essential cricket companion for 2008. |

Cricket In A Fist $13.79 One night Agatha Winter’s phone rings. Jasmine her 13-year-old sister has run away from home and needs to be picked up at the bus terminal. It’s the anniversary of their mother’s accident and subsequent split from the family. Jasmine is determined to exact revenge. Their mother now a flashy self-help guru under a new moniker preaches "willing amnesia": liberation by deliberately forgetting and disowning the past. But "willing amnesia" is no innovation: it runs in the family. The girls’ grandmother and great-grandmother both Holocaust survivors have found their own superficially innocuous yet fiercely destructive ways to fend off memory. In separate struggles the girls work to break free from the burden of their family’s silence. Told in three major and two minor voices Cricket in a Fist offers sophisticated psychological insight. Lewis’s rich command of language transports us into a world of richly imagined characters. |

And God Created Cricket $11.19
Cricket defines Englishness like no other national pastime. From its earliest origins in the sixteenth century (or an early version played by shepherds called creag in the 1300s), through the formation of the MCC and the opening of Lord’s cricket ground in 1787, to the spread of county cricket in the next century, when the Wisden Cricketers’ Almanack was first published and the Ashes series was born, this simple sport of bat and ball has captured the imagination of the masses.

Throughout its 500-year history, cricket has been a mirror for society as a whole, reflecting the changes that have brought us from the quintessential village green to Freddie Flintoff’s pedalo, from W G Grace to Monty Panesar, via a fair number of eccentrics, heroes and downright villains.

William Hill Award-winning writer Simon Hughes, no mean player himself, has lived and breathed cricket his whole life and now takes his analytical skills and typically irreverent eye to charting the history of English cricket. But this is no dry, dusty tome. It is the story of the mad characters who inhabit the game, the extraordinary lengths people will go to to watch and play it, the tale of a national obsession. It debunks the myth of cricket sportsmanship, showing the origins of sledging and match-fixing in centuries of subterfuge, corruption and violence. And it takes us beyond sport, to the heart of what it really means to be English.
|

Don Oslear, the distinguished umpire, has been intimately involved over several years in the process of drafting the new laws, and explains why they needed changing, what views his committe recieved from the governing bodies of all the cricketing nations and from players, spectators and the media, how these were resolved, and what effect they are expected to have on the future of the game.
