Reading too many books?
I’m 14 and consider myself somewhat intelligent. As of now I am reading three books, Zen and the art of…, Consolations of Philosophy and my own study on the Qur’ran. All books pose the challenge that need to be read carefully, and thought of in depth. Consolations of Philosophy is definitely not an easy read, but taken at a slow pace it doesn’t seem to out of range. What are your opinions? Do you think I should put down a book or two and pick it up when I finish the other? Although i take chinese, play aau baseball and do football preseason training this summer, I always find about 2 hours in the day to devote to reading
As far as books go, don’t every worry about “reading too much.” Personally, I like to read just one book at a time, but if studying multiple works at the same time suits you, then do it. Doing all this intellectual labor now will certainly reap great benefits in the long run. However, if you’re feeling overwhelmed, don’t be afraid to slow down or take a break to clear your senses.
I’m fifteen and I read about as much as you do. I’m fluent in Spanish and now I’m learning German. I start varsity football. I also play guitar–so I definitely can relate to you in the sense that you like to have a wide variety of challenging hobbies to occupy your time.

The Way of Zen $9.29 The Way of Zen begins as a succinct guide through the histories of Buddhism and Taoism leading up to the development of Zen Buddhism which drew deeply from both traditions. It then goes on to paint a broad but insightful picture of Zen as it was and is practiced both as a religion and as an element of diverse East Asian arts and disciplines. Watts’s narrative clears away the mystery while enhancing the mystique of Zen. Since the first publication of this book in 1957 Zen Buddhism has become firmly established in the West. As Zen has taken root in Western soil it has incorporated much of the attitude and approach set forth by Watts in The Way of Zen which remains one of the most important introductory books in Western Zen. |

Zen Masters $15.59 Extending their successful series of collections on Zen Buddhism, Heine and Wright present a fifth volume, on what may be the most important topic of all – Zen Masters. Following two volumes on Zen literature (Zen Classics and The Zen Canon) and two volumes on Zen practice (The Koan and Zen Ritual) they now propose a volume on the most significant product of the Zen tradition – the Zen masters who have made this kind of Buddhism the most renowned in the world by emphasizing the role of eminent spiritual leaders and their function in establishing centers, forging lineages, and creating literature and art. Zen masters in China, and later in Korea and Japan, were among the cultural leaders of their times. Stories about their comportment and powers circulated widely throughout East Asia. In this volume ten leading Zen scholars focus on the image of the Zen master as it has been projected over the last millennium by the classic literature of this tradition. Each chapter looks at a single prominent master. Authors assess the master's personality and charisma, his reported behavior and comportment, his relationships with teachers, rivals and disciplines, lines of transmission, primary teachings, the practices he emphasized, sayings and catch-phrases associated with him, his historical and social context, representations and icons, and enduring influences. |

Understanding Zen $15.09 "The authors of this book who both have university affiliations present Zen as a "secular doctrine without any necessary relationship to Buddhism or Eastern culture." Some of the seven chapters deal with such concepts as reason paradox meaning and existence and how they relate to Zen. Others explore successfully the origin of Zen the practice of meditation and the social implications of Zen. The authors also investigate the Taoist and Buddhist ideas preceding Zen and relate it to Freudian psychology anarchism and the dualistic truths of the scientific method. Though this well-done study is accessible to informed lay readers it is more suitable for academic libraries."— Library Journal |

What Is Zen? $7.99 A fervent lifelong student of Zen Alan Watts shows us that it is both an experience a singular powerful moment of realization and a simple way of life with an awareness that affects every moment of every day. Adopted by mainstream America in a way that carries only a vague association of its roots in Zen Buddhism Alan Watts makes it clear that any exploration of Zen must understand and embrace its roots as a form of Buddhist practice derived from its Chinese and East Indian sources. Examining the background of Zen in East Indian religion Watts shows us its evolution through the religion of China. Zen is a synthesis of the contemplative insight of Indian religion and the dynamic liveliness of Taoism as they came together in the pragmatic practical environment of Confucian China. Watts gives us great insight into the living moment of satori and the release of nirvana as well as the methods of meditation that are current today and the influence of Zen culturally in the arts of painting and pottery. |
