Has anyone read this book on Jackie Robinson?
Baseball’s Great Experiment: Jackie Robinson and His Legacy
by: Jules Tygiel
If so…I find this book really interesting. What do YOU think the theory is that Tygiel tries to support with the facts in this book?
Please please please answer the second part of the question, I really am curious because it’s such a controversial topic and many authors have many different perspectives.
Yes, good book, but the best book I’ve ever read on Jackie and one of the best bios ever is “Great Time Coming” by David Faulkner. REad it, you’ll love it.
Did You Know: Jackie Robinson was the First Black Player in the MLB?

I Never Had It Made: An Autobiography of Jackie Robinson $5.81 Before Barry Bonds, before Reggie Jackson, before Hank Aaron, baseball’s stars had one undeniable trait in common: they were all white. I Never Had It Made is Robinson’s own candid, hard-hitting account of what it took to become the first black man in history to play i… |

An Experiment in Leisure $15.19 What is it that stops people from knowing what they want? How often do we wonder where we are going and what our world is all about? Written in 1936 as a companion piece to A Life of One’s Own,  An Experiment in Leisure further charts Marion Milner’s illuminating and rewarding investigation into how we lead our lives. Instead of drawing on her daily diary, she turns to memory images – images not only from her own life but also from books, mythology, travel and religion that seem to point to a suspension of ordinary, everyday awareness. From this condition of emptiness springs an increasing imaginative appreciation both of being alive and of the world we live in. With a new introduction by Maud Ellmann, An Experiment in Leisure remains a great adventure in thinking and living and will be essential reading for all those from a literary, an artistic, a historical, an educational or a psychoanalytic/psychotherapeutic background. |

Great Fitness Experiment: One Year Of Trying Everything $6.19 In The Great Fitness Experiment a funny and informative guide through the morass of contradictory claims and information in today’s health/fitness-obsessed world Charlotte Hilton Andersen goes from gym rat to lab rat trying a new workout each month for a year in an attempt to discover what works what doesn't and what’s just plain weird. She delves into such subjects as the Action Hero Workout Cross Fit Training Going Vegan Double Cardio and others. Interspersed between the chapters on the monthly experiments Anderson offers personal essays on everything from her past experiences with eating disorders to testing the ugliest fitness shoes on the planet to lesson about as she puts it “what I’ve learned from being a girl in our body-obsessed culture.” She writes candidly about her history of anorexia orthorexia and “general-low-self-esteem-exia” and includes anecdotes about the effects of the “health” craze on my students friends and gym buddies. In addition she scours the most recent research to let readers know whether drinking milk after weight lifting really does build more muscle (yep!) or if it matters whether you do cardio or weights first (nope!). She also tests some of the stuff readers have heard about and secretly wanted to try but would never embarrass themselves doing. Readers get all the entertainment and none of the carpet burns as Charlotte bends it like a ballerina squats like a sprinter gets hemorrhoids like an Olympian and HOO-ah like a Navy seal. By the end readers will have new ideas about how to eat healthier work out smarter and hold their own in a Photo-shopped world. |

The Great Experiment: The Story Of Ancient Empires Modern States And The Quest For A Global Nation $13.99 This dramatic narrative of breathtaking scope and riveting focus puts the "story" back into history. It is the saga of how the most ambitious of big ideas — that a world made up of many nations can govern itself peacefully — has played out over the millennia. Humankind’s "Great Experiment" goes back to the most ancient of days — literally to the Garden of Eden — and into the present with an eye to the future. Strobe Talbott looks back to the consolidation of tribes into nations — starting with Israel — and the absorption of those nations into the empires of Hammurabi the Pharaohs Alexander the Caesars Charlemagne Genghis Khan the Ottomans and the Hapsburgs through incessant wars of territory and religion to modern alliances and the global conflagrations of the twentieth century. He traces the breakthroughs and breakdowns of peace along the way: the Pax Romana the Treaty of Westphalia the Concert of Europe the false start of the League of Nations the creation of the flawed but indispensable United Nations the effort to build a "new world order" after the cold war and America’s unique role in modern history as "the master builder" of the international system. Offering an insider’s view of how the world is governed today Talbott interweaves through this epic tale personal insights and experiences and takes us with him behind the scenes and into the presence of world leaders as they square off or cut deals with each other. As an acclaimed journalist he covered the standoff between the superpowers for more than two decades; as a high-level diplomat he was in the thick of tumultuous events in the 1990s when the bipolar equilibrium gave way to chaos in the Balkans the emergence of a new breed of international terrorist and America’s assertiveness during its "unipolar moment" — which he sees as the latest but not the last stage in the Great Experiment. Talbott concludes with a trenchant critique of the worldview and policies of George W. Bush whose presidency he calls a "consequential aberration" in the history of American foreign policy. Then looking beyond the morass in Iraq and the battle for the White House he argues that the United States can regain the trust of the world by leading the effort to avert the perils of climate change and nuclear catastrophe. |

The Great Starvation Experiment: The Heroic Men Who Starved so That Millions Could Live $16.99 What does it feel like to starve? To feel your body cry out for nourishment, to think only of food? How many fitful, hungry nights must pass before dreams of home-cooked meals metastasize into nightmares of cannibalism? Why would anyone volunteer to find out? In The Great Starvation Experiment, historian Todd Tucker tells the harrowing story of thirty-six young men who willingly and bravely faced down profound, consuming hunger. As conscientious objectors during World War II, these men were eager to help in the war effort but restricted from combat by their pacifist beliefs. So, instead, they volunteered to become guinea pigs in one of the most unusual experiments in medical history — one that required a year of systematic starvation. Dr. Ancel Keys was already famous for inventing the K ration when the War Department asked for his help with feeding the starving citizens of Europe and the Far East at the war’s end. Fascists and Communists, it was feared, could gain a foothold in war-ravaged areas. "Starved people," Keys liked to say, "can’t be taught Democracy." The government needed to know the best way to rehabilitate those people who had been severely underfed during the long war. To study rehabilitation, Keys first needed to create a pool of starving test subjects. Gathered in a cutting-edge lab underneath the football stadium at the University of Minnesota, Dr. Keys’ test subjects forsook most food and were monitored constantly so that Dr. Keys and his scientists could study the effects of starvation on otherwise healthy people. While the weight loss of the men followed a neat mathematical curve, the psychological deterioration was less predictable. Some men drank quarts and quarts of water to fill their empty stomachs. One man chewed as many as forty packs of gum a day. One man mutilated himself to escape the experiment. Ultimately only four of the men were expelled from the experiment for cheating — a testament to the volunteers’ determination and toughness. To prevent atrocities of the kind committed by the Nazi doctors, international law now prevents this kind of experimentation on healthy people. But in this remarkable book, Todd Tucker captures a lost sliver of American history — a time when cold scientific principles collided with living, breathing human beings. Tucker depicts the agony and endurance of a group of extraordinary men whose lives were altered not only for the year they participated in the experiment, but forever. |

The Beckham Experiment: How The World’s Most Famous Athlete Tried To Conquer America $11.99 In 2007, David Beckham, the golden boy of soccer, shocked the international sports world when he signed a five-year contract with an American team, the Los Angeles Galaxy. Under the direction of his manager, Simon Fuller, the mastermind behind American Idol and the Spice Girls, Beckham was ready for a monumental challenge and a risky adventure-ready, as Fuller put it, to earn his stripes Stateside. Could he pull off what no player had ever accomplished (including Pelé in the 1970s) and transform soccer into one of the most popular spectator sports in America? It was a bold experiment: failure meant a team, a league, a sport, and Beckham himself might miss their chance to hit primetime in the U.S. With unprecedented access to the Galaxy and one-on-one interviews with Beckham, veteran Sports Illustrated writer Grant Wahl focuses on the inner circle of the experiment: Beckham, Galaxy leading scorer Landon Donovan, Simon Fuller, controversial former coach Ruud Gullit, outspoken former Galaxy president Alexi Lalas, and Mrs. Victoria "Posh Spice" Beckham. Wahl takes readers behind the scenes, on the road with the team and inside the locker room, to reveal just what happened on and off the field when the most renowned player in the world left the glamour of European soccer to play in a country that has yet to fully embrace the sport. We find out what his teammates really think of their superstar captain, who was calling the shots behind the scenes, how Beckham’s management conducted a shadow takeover of the Galaxy organization, and if the team plans to embrace him-or not-when he returns from AC Milan for the 2009 season. The Beckham Experiment is a no-holds-barred account of ego clashes and epic winless streaks, rivalries and resentments, big gambles and great expectations, cultural and class collisions, and ultimately the volatile mix of celebrity and professional sports. As Beckham embarks on his third season with the Galaxy, the question remains: even for a player the caliber of David Beckham, are some goals out of reach? From the Hardcover edition. |

But Priestley’s revolutionary ideas put him in terrible danger. An Experiment In Misery $8.99 Though best known for The Red Badge of Courage his classic novel of men at war in his tragically brief life and career Stephen Crane produced a wealth of stories-among them "The Monster " "The Upturned Face " "The Open Boat " and the title story-that stand among the most acclaimed and enduring in the history of American fiction. This superb volume collects stories of unique power and variety in which impressionistic hallucinatory and realistic situations alike are brilliantly conveyed through the cold sometimes brutal irony of Crane’s narrative voice. |

Experiment In Love $9.99 A New York Times Book Review Notable Book of the Year It was the year after Chappaquiddick and all spring Carmel McBain had watery dreams about the disaster. Now she Karina and Julianne were escaping the dreary English countryside for a London University hall of residence. Interspersing accounts of her current position as a university student with recollections of her childhood and an ever difficult relationship with her longtime schoolmate Karina Carmel reflects on a generation of girls desiring the power of men but fearful of abandoning what is expected and proper. When these bright but confused young women land in late 1960s London they are confronted with a slew of new preoccupations–sex politics food and fertility–and a pointless grotesque tragedy of their own. Hilary Mantel’s magnificent novel examines the pressures on women during the early days of contemporary feminism to excel–but not be too successful–in England’s complex hierarchy of class and status. |

The Rumseian Experiment $7.99 According to Jonathan Swift, necessity is the mother of invention. Here is an example that proves the rule. Our revolutionary leaders urgently sought better access to their continent. Rivers were the only avenues open to them but going west against the current was hard. Washington and Jefferson and Franklin and other founders turned to James Rumsey, a genius living at the edge of the wilderness. Rumsey had an invention which addressed their necessity. It was a steamboat. It inspired solutions that would open the continent to settlement. |
