This is a more interesting question that some might think. The question is, should Ichiro get credit for his performance in Japan?
There aren’t many parallels to the situation … yet. How many baseball players have performed well in their own country for several years, and then come to America and played well? In other words, a player would have to be judged for his complete career. The last time that really happened in a sense was for the players in the Negro Leagues, some of whom made the successful jump to the Majors post-Jackie Robinson.
Jumping to other sports — football has taken Warren Moon, who had several great years in Canada before coming down to the U.S. Basketball’s hall has taken many different nationalities, indicating a different approach. Hockey has voted in some international players, but not a ton of them.
My guess is that Ichiro makes it if he stays a few more years and continues to play at close to this level. But I can’t wait to hear the debate.
