Dwight Gooden Arrested For DWI With 5-year-old Son In Car
Die hard baseball fans will remember that the New York Mets’ Dwight Gooden was one of the most amazing pitchers ever. Dr. K (aka Doc Gooden) mixed a great 95 mph fastball with a movement and an amazing curveball that buckled batter’s knees. The amazing four time all star’s life after baseball as well as his playing career was sadly marred by alcohol and drug abuse. According to the New York Daily News, Dwight Gooden’s recent DWI arrest in Franklin Lakes, New Jersey came after “three-and-one-half years” of sobriety. His five-year-old son Dylan was reportedly in the car.
At 45, Dwight Gooden faces multiple charges
As well as being intoxicated while driving, Gooden has also been charged with DWI with a child passenger, endangering the welfare of a child, reckless driving, and leaving the scene of the two car accident. The accident was reported via a 911 call.
It was reported by the Daily News that Gooden was released eventually on his own recognizance. Although Gooden has had problems with cocaine and alcohol in the past, the New Jersey Police have not revealed what drug was involved. Territory came with financial struggles. If Dwight Gooden did use installment payday loans, hopefully he used them appropriately.
Missing the hall of fame – and on life
If Dwight Gooden hadn’t struggled with substance abuse in his career with baseball, there is little doubt that he wouldn’t have made it into the Hall of Fame. Battles with the bottle and cocaine shortened his career, not to mention time spent in five separate rehab stints and in court. That doesn’t even show everything Gooden lost in his life because of addiction. This is a struggle he has with his and his family and it private, one that might have even involved no credit check personal loans during times of hardship.
The evidence is ample in his play day. He finished with a 194-112 record as well as a 3.51 ERA. His 162-game average, according to Baseball Reference, was a 16-9 season with 7.4 strikeouts per nine innings, both of which are excellent. Even those stats don’t accurately represent his early career magnificence. He set the Major League rookie record of 276 strikeouts and 11.4 strikeouts per nine innings in the 1984 national Rookie of the Year. You can’t count the rookie “Matches” Matt Kilroy’s 513 strikeouts for the Baltimore of American Association in 1886 since the rules were very different then and today the American Association is less than Major League caliber.
1985 was Dr. K’s year
Dwight Gooden got even better after a great rookie season. In 1985 he just went 24-4 with a 1.53 ERA and a league leading strikeout of 268 strikeouts. Major League history, it was one of the most dominant pitching seaons. Dr. K played a key role the following season with the New York Mets’ first world series triumph since 1969. However, red flags began to show. He missed the team’s victory parade because he’d been on a cocaine binge, and by December 13, 1986, he was arrested after fighting police in his hometown of Tampa, Florida. There were flashes of greatest afterward, but nothing like what had come before. On May 14, 1996 he threw a no hitter while on the New York Yankees, the team who won titles in that season and in 2000.
How does someone who endangers a young child like that walk?
That is a question the New Jersey Police can answer, but they won’t talk. Gooden needs serious help, and he shouldn’t be allowed to put his five year old in any danger anymore. Hopefully the situation wasn’t one of skating on fame.
