Baseball batting drills?

hey my high school school’s softball team’s kinda f—– up and we dont even have a batting machine. i wanna improve on my batting and the drills we do is side toss batting where one of your friends stands facing you 45 degrees towards where you’re hitting and tosses to you.. i find it’s really basic and wanna do something more advanced. Recommend me on some pitching drills as well cause im also a pitcher.

I’ve always refered to the toss drill you described as “soft toss” There are endless varieties to this but the bottom line is the more swings you get in the better. Be careful though, in batting practice it is better to take pitches or tosses than to swing at ones that aren’t in the strike zone, your swinging motion should be the same in drills as in real hitting, this is also true for the relative location of the ball to your body when you make contact.

some variations you could try are hitting whiffle balls, wadded up newspapers (adds a knuckle curve effect that forces you to watch the “ball” all the way to the bat),

Vary the angle at which people throw the soft toss, try having them throw it from behind you or the side, again it forces you to watch the ball the whole way.

You do need to get practice reading pitches and the only way to do this is by having someone (or a machine, too bad you don’t have one) throw pitches.

If you are looking for drills to do on your own, either use a tee or see if there is a local batting cage, it will cost a few dollars per round but its good quality practice.

As far as pitching, I don’t know if you are playing slowpitch or fastpitch but if its slowpitch, try varying the height of the pitch, typically you wan the arc to be as high as possible, this results in hitters trying to hit the ball up by their chest and they are more likely to hit pop-ups. if its fastpitch I can’t give any advice because I’ve never pitched fastpitch.
